Even after allowance by the government, are cinemas ready to function again?

The Government of Maharashtra issued an order today, allowing cinemas to start operations from November 5. It may have made people in the business rather happy and relieved, but that’s not all.

The order which has been in the offing for months and was expected to arrive on Tuesday, November 3, arrived only this evening, permitting cinema halls to function at 50 percent capacity. The order also states that food and beverage will not be allowed inside cinema halls, multiplexes and drama theatres and that the state’s Cultural Affairs Department and local authorities will issue an SOP that has to be followed while functioning. This will be prepared in consideration with the SOPs and guidelines issued by the Information and Broadcasting Ministry last month. Till the time of going online, the said SOPs had not reached cinema operators, which added to the confusion in a trade about whether cinemas are indeed opening their doors to patrons tomorrow morning.

According to some cinema owners, this is just a first step, and there is a lot more to be done as they are closed for a very long period of time. They have to ensure that the SOPs are in order and most importantly, they still don’t have a schedule in place as to what they will screen and at what time. These are decisions that can make only when they know which film producers are willing to release their content in a cinema hall. These are negotiations that have been on for months and will go on for some more time. Besides, the opening will also require assistance and aid from the government bodies. We will need the industry to support us in our journey back into the business.
