Workshop on Heritage Conservation and Structural Stabilization

An onsite interactive workshop was held on the topic Heritage Conservation and Structural Stabilization on 8th March 2017 at The City Palace Museum, Udaipur, Rajasthan. The workshop was organised by M/s Appex Innovations, Mumbai in association with Maharana of Mewar Charitable Foundation, Udaipur and Dronah, Gurgaon.

The workshop showcased the benefits of new products being used for the first time in India such as Jahn from M/s Appex Innovation, Mumbai and also others from M/s Thor Helical Limited, USA with live demonstration and presentation. This workshop explored the use of advanced conservation techniques for structural stabilization and historic preservation. It was relevant for conservation professionals, engineers from government and contractors involved with heritage conservation including large scale conservation works under HRIDAY and SMART cities.

The workshop held at various locations within the City Palace Museum, Udaipur premises saw representatives and participants from premier institutions and organizations like CBRI, CPWD, DMRC, Udaipur Municipal Corporation, Mehrangarh Trust and other professionals from the field – Smart City Project Engineers, Conservations architects, materials conservators and practicing architects.

Starting with brief presentations from Dr. Shikha Jain and Mr. S. Girikumar giving an overview of the conservation works undertaken by MMCF from its foundation to what is going to be done in the future, the workshop went on to focus on new innovation and solutions towards stabilisation of heritage structures without compromising its aesthetics, which is important in the heritage context.
The organisers presented innovative structure repair solutions with minimum interventions for defects such as crack stitches, masonry repair, and reinforced brick beam lintel repairs. In the workshop, they also introduced Jahn Mortar, a company which deals with and manufactures lime-based products for heritage finishes, which meets the demands of heritage structural conservation of the present day. With the onsite demonstrations of their products, showcasing combination of Helical Bars and mineral based user friendly material from Jahn, they presented an end to end solution for structural problems.

Mr. Manish Arora from UMC, responsible for Smart City Projects said that Worksop was very useful for field engineers.
MMCF’s goal is to showcase international benchmark techniques for conservation and for the City Palace Museum to serve as an educational resource for the conservation community of India and abroad. The Foundation aims to establish its own benchmarks for this goal. MMCF is keen to share its best-practices and conservation experience for knowledge exchange in addition to its implementable conservation programme.
MMCF is the pioneer in heritage conservation, preservation and promotion of living heritage.
In its continuous effort to excel, MMCF has brought forth new materials and techniques for conservation to be used for the first time in India through this workshop.
